Institutional Research comprises Research undertaken, commissioned, compiled or formally adopted by the Windmill Family Office for an identified institutional Purpose.
Its function is to improve the Office's understanding of the environments, institutions and questions relevant to its stewardship responsibilities and to preserve useful Research as part of the Office's accumulated Intellectual Capital.
Publication may make useful work available to others while establishing a durable public record of the Research upon which aspects of the Office's institutional understanding have been built.
Publication does not imply affiliation with, endorsement by, or a relationship with an institution merely because that institution is discussed or analysed.
Selecting Institutional Counterparties
An Evidence Review Series
Family offices depend upon external institutions for capabilities that cannot, or should not, all be maintained internally. This series examines what the public evidence can reliably establish when selecting important institutional counterparties—and what still requires direct diligence and peer evidence.
Common proposition: Public evidence narrows the field. It does not substitute for institutional diligence.
Family-Office-Friendly Advisers in the UK, EU and US: A Consolidated Evidence Review
Which Advisers Serve Family Offices Well? A Consolidated Review of the Public Evidence Across Banking, Law, Accountancy, Real Estate and Investment.
This consolidated review finds that credible provider long-lists can be constructed in every market, but that no market publishes independent comparative evidence based upon the experience of family-office clients themselves. It develops an integrated selection framework based on competitive tender, comparable evidence, conflict disclosure, peer references, continuity and independent evaluation.

Which Banks Serve Family Offices Well? What the Public Evidence Can and Cannot Establish
No independent comparative study ranks banks according to family-office client experience. Awards can help construct a long-list; actual appointment requires direct evidence from credit behaviour, onboarding, requirements and peer references.

Which Law Firms Serve Family Offices Well? What the Public Evidence Can and Cannot Establish
The legal evidence base is materially stronger than banking because research-led directories incorporate interviews and repeated annual research. Directories provide a credible shortlist, not an appointment.

Which Accountancy Firms Serve Family Offices Well? What the Public Evidence Can and Cannot Establish
The accountancy evidence base sits between banking and law: research-led directory evidence exists, but no dedicated family-office accountancy category and limited direct evidence of reporting quality.

Which Real Estate Advisers Serve Family Offices Well? What the Public Evidence Can and Cannot Establish
The public evidence is the weakest of the five markets. The central structural issue is agency: transaction-paid advisers have an economic interest in the transaction completing, making independence the first test.

Which Investment and Wealth Advisers Serve Family Offices Well? What the Public Evidence Can and Cannot Establish
The evidence is varied. The strongest transferable methods—independent client interviews, competitive tender, standardised performance reporting and independent evaluation—exist in institutional markets rather than family-office research.

Trusts, Foundations & Family Foundations
WFO maintains a searchable 2025 baseline and 2026 annual review of the first 100 source-ranked trusts, foundations and family foundations. Inclusion identifies an institution as a subject of Research; it does not imply affiliation, endorsement, peer status or relationship.
PUBLICATION STATUS & PROVENANCE
Each Institutional Research record identifies, as applicable: institutional status; author or commissioning institution; date; version; Research Purpose; and Current, Superseded or Historical status.
Where WFO formally adopts useful pre-existing work, original authorship remains preserved. Adoption establishes institutional reference status; it does not become retrospective authorship.
