A personal statement, not a Governance document
I write in a personal capacity, as the family member who currently holds Principal responsibility for the Purpose, Governance and major Decisions of Windmill Family Office. This Foreword explains why I accepted that responsibility and the discipline I bring to it; it does not create or alter the Office’s Governance, Authority or legal arrangements.
WHY THIS EXISTS
A family does not require an institution to remember who it is. It requires one when memory alone is no longer sufficient to protect what memory has carried.
The documented history of the family’s Capital and Stewardship reaches at least to 1891, by which time its underlying discipline was already established. For most of the period since, that discipline was carried from person to person—in judgement passed down rather than written down, and in Decisions made without a record capable of surviving those who made them.
That method served the family for a long time. It does not scale indefinitely. Nor does it reliably survive uncertainty about who currently holds responsibility, the Authority upon which they act, what others understand that Authority to be, or where the relevant Knowledge and Evidence reside.
The consequences became apparent more than once. Most visibly, a family home in Canonbury—for nearly a century a place where the family gathered, married, mourned and celebrated—changed hands without consultation with the wider family. Whatever the legal position at the relevant time, the episode exposed how readily Authority, family expectation, institutional memory and shared understanding can become separated when responsibility and reasoning have not been made sufficiently visible or preserved.
Windmill Family Office exists to close that Knowledge and Governance gap.
Its Purpose is not to reinvent what the family already understood, but to give that understanding a form that can be examined, checked, governed, revised and handed on—so that the next generation inherits a capability and a discipline, not merely a description of one.
WHY I HOLD THIS RESPONSIBILITY NOW
I did not arrive at this Purpose from inside an established family office.
I arrived at it through more than twenty years spent being brought into organisations at the point where judgement, Evidence and Authority had come apart from one another: defence programmes requiring recovery; command in an active theatre of operations; thirteen years exercising judicial Authority within the Courts Martial system; and a succession of private-equity-backed businesses facing genuine difficulty.
The first requirement was repeatedly the same:
Establish what is actually true. Distinguish it from what people assume, remember or want to be true. Identify who possesses the Authority to decide—and then decide accordingly.
The intellectual discipline underlying that approach is General Semantics, which I first encountered in adolescence rather than adopting for the purposes of WFO. It requires attention to the distinction between the Map and the Territory; recognition that every description leaves something out; and awareness that Evidence, people, circumstances and conclusions must be understood in their proper Time-State.
It treats claims as conditional upon the Evidence supporting them, dates that Evidence and refuses to allow a compelling narrative to substitute for an observable fact.
It is demanding to work this way. It is also the only method I have found that reliably survives contact with an organisation under genuine pressure.
The same discipline now informs how Windmill Family Office reasons, decides, records and discloses.
Governance. Evidence before narrative. Recoverability before optimisation.
These are not devices adopted to make the Office appear rigorous. They express an operating discipline I have applied professionally for more than two decades, now directed towards a family Purpose that predates my involvement by more than a century.
The judgement that has been required, at different times, to stabilise a defence programme, exercise command, hold judicial Authority or recover a business in genuine difficulty is the judgement now responsible for this Office. That capability also remains available, through appropriately governed appointments and engagements, to organisations and boards facing comparable circumstances.
The company is new. The duty it carries is not.
Neither, I have found, is the discipline by which duty of any kind must ultimately be discharged.
